Method for differential diagnosis on biopsy for ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease

Description :

The method consists in detecting and localizing product of translation of the gene encoding PPARγ on a sample of bowel tissue comprising at least cells of the intestinal epithelium and of the intestinal lamina propria. Differential expressions of PPARγ within these two types of intestinal cells are characteristics of ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease.

Novelty

The novelty consists in using immunohistochemistry technique for direct quantification and localisation of PPARγ on a biopsy of bowel tissue.

Advantages, benefits

High sensitivity and specificity of this method permit to slice when a first diagnostic made with serologic methods or invasive investigations is not obvious.

Application fields:

  • Diagnosis of ulcerative colitis
  • Diagnosis of Crohn’s disease

Background

Gastroenterologists are often faced with patients that require multiple diagnostic procedures to accurately diagnose their exact disease. Despite current classification systems and good clinical, morphologic, and histopathologic tools, physicians sometimes still have problems differentiating between Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. In approximately 10% of colitis cases, no differentiation can be made and these patients are classified as indeterminate colitis. Analysis of PPARγ expression in the colon may help to distinguish between these two conditions and to reduce the number of invasive investigations.
