Research fields of excellence
Actors of the regional research...
Actors of the regional research have led to the development of extraordinary channels
Cardiovascular illnesses, metabolic illnesses and nutrition
The region has a long tradition of work in these fields, with regard to research as well as to epidemiology. Several renowned teams cover the whole of these problematics.
We would like to particularly stress the different research teams : in atherosclerosis - Professor FRUCHART (IPL), genetics - Professor AMOUYEL (IPL), epidemiology – Professor SALOMEZ (CH&U), pharmacology - Professor LIBERSA (School of Medicine), those of the Cardiological Hospital and that of nutrition of Professor ROMOND (University of Lille II).
Therapeutic Innovation
All the traditional professions involved in the research of new drugs are present within the different institutions of the metropolitan area. Professor STAELS has developed unique expertise in functional genomics applied to metabolic diseases. They work perfectly well in teams of great renown for the development of drug candidates.
Let us cite, for example, the teams of Professor LESIEUR (Pharmaceutical Chemistry Institute) who are working on the conception of small therapeutic molecules by drug design, CEREP (Professor TARTAR), the most important capacity in France in combinatorial chemistry, the teams of Professors DUPUIS and FORMSTECHER (CHRU and Medical School), specialists in traditional and cellular pharmacology, the Centre for Clinical Investigation, with the teams of Professors CORTOT and LIBERSA (CH&U, INSERM), the Clinical Research Unit of the Oscar Lambret Centre, and CRESGE (the Medical Economy Reference Centre).
Neuroscience
Research in this field has been a priority in the region for many decades, for INSERM and for teams from the Medical School. For years, an active branch has been set up with high quality clinical teams.
Pr. BEAUVILLAIN (INSERM), Pr. DESTEE (CHRU), Pr. AMOUYEL (IPL), Pr. BUEE (INSERM) and Pr PASQUIER (Regional Network Centre on Memory) teams, who work in perfect synergy, regularly publish articles in internationally renowned scientific journals.
Infectious Diseases
The Lille School on Parasitic Immunology has had a wide reputation for several decades, particularly at the Pasteur Institute of Lille.
This has lead to the formation of several teams. Many research programmes involve major pathologies with significant international support (WHO, EEC, Region, etc.), above all the teams of the Pasteur Institute (Professor CAPRON, Dr. LOCHT) as well as that of Professor MOUTON (CHU Tourcoing AIDS).
Cancer
From basic research to applied and clinical research, the excellence of several teams is world famous. The latter include Dr. STEHELIN's laboratories in molecular oncology, and the clinical Research Unit at the Centre Oscar Lambret, that participate in the development of new drugs and therapies against cancer. To these teams can be added the laboratories of Pr. VANDENBUNDER (CNRS), Dr. KERCKAERT (molecular oncohaematology, INSERM), Professor BAUTERS (blood diseases, CHRU).
Toxicology and environmental sciences
The region enjoys a privileged location for environmental research thanks to the presence of the CHRU anti-poison centre, the lichen and environmental toxicology laboratory of the University of Pharmacy, the health-work-ergonomics group (CERESTE), specialised departments of the Pasteur Institute of Lille (IPL) and the Dunkirk Centre for Research on the Industrial Environment (CREID).
Orthopaedics and biomaterials
The region is fortunate enough to have access to varied experts throughout the area: Calot Center in Berck, the University of Valenciennes, the Institute of Medical Technology of the CHRU, orthopaedic and rehabilitation departments of the CHRU.
The presence of specialised companies reinforces the potential for the development of strong teams. Research and application are conducted, in particular, within the Regional Federation of Biomaterials as well as through the Research Institute on Handicap.
Glycoconjugates
The Scientific and Technical University of Lille (USTL), led by Pr MICHALSKI, is world renown for its know-how in the fundamental and practical work it performs. This team can offer its competence to industrialists in the fields of structural cellular and molecular glycobiology (isolation, structure, definition of glycoconjugates; the study and regulation as regards the biosynthesis of glycoconjugates; the study of the structure-function relations of glucidic compounds).
Lasers
Medical laser applications are numerous. Through the Lille biomedical engineering applications and the Institute of Medical Technology (CHRU), true competence with regard to medical lasers is present in Lille. The Lille CHRU and INSERM (Dr MORDON) have a care and medical photo research centre, the Laser and Medical Optronics Centre (CLDM).
Development of cell therapies
Significant progress has recently confirmed the perspectives of cell therapy in the treatment of numerous human pathologies. Several applications of this new therapeutic approach have already been envisaged at the Regional University Hospital Centre (CHRU) of Lille, particularly in the treatment of diabetes (ERM 106), neurology (EA2683), cardiovascular disease, haematology (Unit 524), dermatology (Unit 459) and pneumology.
Inflammatory pathologies
Several research themes are developed by local teams, particularly the study of Chronic Inflammatory Diseases of the intestine (EPI0114), the analysis of autoreactive response in multiple sclerosis (EA 2686), the analysis of the factors of bronchopulmonary inflammatory diseases (EA2679).
