The Nutrition, Healthcare, Longevity Cluster

the Crossroads of Nutrition, Biotechnology and Health

The Nutrition, Healthcare, Longevity Cluster was approved by the government on 12 July 2005.

Its aim is to bring together actors in the agrifood sectors, biotech companies and research and academic institutions from the Nord-Pas de Calais Region to focus on innovative collaboration projects that generate jobs linked to nutrition and health.

Since its creation, 105 R&D projects have been approved, totalling 230 million euros in investment. 25 to 30 projects would be approved each year.

The main themes concern the creation and development of innovative processes and products in the following fields :

Prevention, via nutritionand the treatment of metabolic, cardiovascular and related diseasesPrevention and the treatment of diseases linked to ageing.

Some Examples

Formulation and development of functional foods and ingredientsImproved food product quality through industrial processing (quality of their nutritional composition, avoiding the occurrence of allergens, etc.)Identifying, then validating new biological targets, selecting molecules likely to act on such targets and offering preventive and therapeutic action, assessing their effectiveness, their mechanisms of action and their toxicity, their impact on the population (epidemiology and clinical research),Mastering their synthesis and integration in a food, ingredient or drug.Developing and improving suitable preventive practices.

The unique motivation of leaders in the agrifood industry in Europe and worldwide : Lesaffre, Roquette, Finaler, Bonduelle, Mc Cain, Groupe Soufflet, etc.

A major investment on the part of healthcare and biotech companies : Bifinove, Cardialpha, Cellial Technologies, CECMA, Heart and Arteries Foundation, Genfit, Genoscreen, Macopharma, Orgamétrie, Tereo, etc.

The markets concerned are

food products health foods (functional ingredients, dietetic products, food supplements) the pharmaceutical biotechnology medical industries (devices, software, clinical trials, etc.).
